People who think protest has stopped working should look to Iran, where the government just admitted to killing thousands to stop the protests.

It's definitely a volatile situation in Iran, and I fear for many of those protesters, who are putting their lives on the line. It's hard to know what's going on because so much is locked down. I hope you're right about what the government is admitting to, Joan. There is such terrible irony in Trump urging those protesters to take down their institutions while ICE goes after protesters here. It's beyond hypocrisy.

Wonderfully written, insightful piece. And a reminder that the natural world offers the best antidote to hopelessness and despair, which is a reason to do all we can--yes, by protesting, among other things--to protect it.

Thanks, Dennis. I really agree that the natural world is an antidote to politics, especially the brutal and chaotic display we're now faced with. I think the arts are an antidote, too. All these things allow imagination to grow, but I'm aware of how fragile these things are.

We'll get more by confronting the Dems than GOP. I've had enough of their hand-wringing and mealy-mouthed denunciations. It's in their power to close the government down. They can refuse to participate until ICE is abolished.

Yes, I think one of many ways to resist right now is to call/email your Dem Congresspeople, even in blue states, to push them to shut down the government and to support Noem’s impeachment - to focus serious opposition over ICE funding and Trump’s tariffs and threats to NATO allies. Fine to pressure Republicans, too, but I’d say Dem reps are more likely to pay attention. The fact that they’re still handwringing is depressing but typical.
