I tried to watch the debate through the eyes of a lower info voter and from that POV I think Vance helped Trump more than Waltz helped Harris. But who knows.

I thought the moderators were good. I'm a big fan of Margaret Brennan; she is a tough interviewer and I like to watch Face The Nation because of her.

FWIW, my wife and I just sent in our ballots!

David, I agree, Vance did help Trump, although this will likely fade as the news cycle roars on. I like Norah O and Margaret Brennan, too, but as journalists, they were hamstrung by not being allowed to fact-check during the proceedings (the QR code was a joke). Vance lied repeatedly and very smoothly, exactly the performance that appears convincing to those who aren’t political junkies (the low-info voter you mention).

He really is a reality-TV candidate, even more so than Trumo, who can’t restrain his worst impulses. I can see Vance becoming the equivalent of Orwell’s Big Brother, which worries me deeply. Will we all come to “love” him? I also noted that the moderators seemed more nervous than usual, especially at the beginning, in part because I assume their role as tough journalists had been reigned in.

My take on Vance is that he has an enormous "Will" to achieve power. And he's equipped with the intellectual tools that could fulfill his ambitions. Whatever the outcome this November, Vance is the favorite to be the nominee in 2028. And, yes, he is scary. Scarier than Trump in many ways.

I was not aware of the no fact-check rule. I thought the moderators did state facts from time to time at the end of a topic.

Yes, their main instructions were that it was up to the candidates to fact-check each other during the debate: viewers were told to go to the CBS website for real-time fact checking - none of that was realistic, given Vance’s history of casually lying and spinning the media. CBS was reacting to all the “bad press” ABC moderators got in the last debate for fact checking Trump. They should never have hobbled O’Donnell and Brennan in that way. Lies are lies - and the public needs to be informed when they are, rather than letting a smooth performer like Vance hold sway. Yes, he is much scarier than Trump.
